C.I. Marshall Finalist for Tucson Festival Of Books Literary Awards
Marshall was one of six poets selected for a Poetry Master Workshop with Tim Z. Hernandez on March 11-12, 2024 in Tucson, Arizona. The competition received 600 entries for poetry, fiction and nonfiction.

Join us for an evening of poetry in celebration of National Poetry Month! Poets Rose Auslander, Howie Good, and C. I. Marshall will each read some of their work and answer questions regarding their craft and inspiration.
Rose Auslander’s last name means “foreigner”—her grandparents all fled to the U.S. to escape pogrom in Ukraine, and her recent poems concern the ongoing war there. She is the author of the book Wild Water Child, winner of the 2016 Bass River Press Poetry Prize; chapbooks Folding Water, Hints, and The Dolphin in the Gowanus; and poems in the Berkeley Poetry Review, Baltimore Review, New American Writing, New Ohio Review, RHINO, Roanoke Review, Rumble Fish, Tinderbox, Tupelo Quarterly — and upcoming in the Atlanta Review. She earned her MFA in Poetry at Warren Wilson and lives on Cape Cod.
Howie Good, Ph.D., professor emeritus of Digital Media and Journalism at SUNY New Paltz, is the author of many poetry collections, including most recently The Horses Were Beautiful from Grey Book Press and Swimming in Oblivion: New and Selected Poems from Redhawk Publications. He is the winner of the Lorien Poetry Prize from Thoughtcrime Press for The Loser’s Guide to Street Fighting and the Press Americana Prize for Poetry for Dangerous Acts Starring Unstable Elements. His next book, Heart-Shaped Hole, is due from Laughing Ronin Press this spring. He co-edits the journal Unlost, dedicated to found poetry.
C. I. Marshall received an MFA, Creative Writing, Poetry, from CA State University, Long Beach, B.A. Fine Arts, Mills College and was editor for ARTLIFE Magazine. Marshall’s poems have appeared in Verdad, Spillway, Packinghouse Review, Beyond the Lyric Moment: Poetry Inspired by Workshops with David St. John, Birmingham Poetry Review, The Broad River Review, Stone Quarterly Journal and Poems In The Waiting Room, UK. Marshall’s poem, “Myself As A Playboy Bunny” won the 2018 Verve International Poetry Festival Contest, Birmingham, UK and her poem “What I Love About Love’s” received Honorable Mention in the 2021 Steve Kowit Poetry Prize juried by Dorianne Laux. Marshall’s manuscript The Locksmith Journeys Into The Afterlife was co-winner of the 2022 Frosted Fire First Pamphlet Award, UK and was published by Frosted Fire in January 2023. Kicking off our packed year of sharing poetry globally is Saturday’s book launch by American poet C.I. Marshall (Consuelo), winner of the Frosted Fire First Pamphlet Award 2022. Consuelo is launching her award-winning debut pamphlet/chapbook — The Locksmith Journeys Into The Underworld. She is supported by a reading from her fellow winner of the Frosted Fire Award 2022, British poet Helena Goddard.
Saturday 28 January at 7 pm London Time – a free event on Zoom – Places can be reserved here.
The event features all three judges of our forthcoming Frosted Fire First Pamphlet Competition 2023 – Consuelo, Helena Goddard, and Marilyn Timms. This competition is open until 3 March, with the prize of award of a publishing contract and 50 free copies.
Our second competition this year offers the New Voices First Pamphlet Award – a publishing contract with 50 free copies for a poet aged 25 or younger. It opens on 2 April.
Our first Open Submissions window of the year is now accepting poets’ polished, unpublished poems on any subject. Our second submission window, One Year On, starts on 26 February, and looks for poems on first anniversaries like that of the Ukraine War. Poems celebrating weddings, birthdays, and any other special event are also welcome .
We run two online events every month, to record poets reading their published work for publication of the audio in wildfire words. Other forthcoming events areshowcases of competition winners and book launches. Forthcoming events are detailed at our Events page.
Our thanks to the 800 poets from 25 countries who entered our competitions and free submissions windows during 2022.

Frosted Fire First Pamphlet Award winner 2022
C.I. Marshall’s first collection, The Locksmith Journeys Into The Afterlife, won the Frosted Fire First Pamphlet Award in 2022, and her book will be published in January.
On January 28, 2023, C.I. Marshall will launch her book in a free Zoom event hosted by wildfire words. Details of the event and reservations are here.
C.I.’s Poem Selected for Posting in U.K. Surgery Waiting Rooms
C.I. Marshall’s poem,”Homing Pigeons” will be included in Poems in the Waiting Room Winter Poetry Cards for over 20,000 surgery offices in the UK.

We shall be so delighted to include your poem ‘Homing Pigeon’ in PitWR’s forthcoming Winter poetry card (due out towards the end of December). Alabama State Poetry Society Fall 2018 Contest
C.I. Marshall’s poem, “There Is Nothing Beautiful” won second place in the Alabama State Poetry Society Fall Contest, “The wild animal that inspires you” category.
Verve Poetry Festival 2018
My poem, Myself As A Playboy Bunny won first prize in the 2018 Verve Poetry Competition. I traveled to Birmingham, England to read at the festival.

We are delighted to announce the winners poets of the 2018 Verve Poetry Competition, as judged by celebrated poet Luke Kennard. Congratulations to all our winners and a huge thank you to everyone around the world that entered the Verve Poetry Competition this year!
Luke’s comments:
‘Myself as a Playboy Bunny.’ This is one of the first poems I read in the judging process and it set the bar very high. I kept returning to it to re-read and got something new out of it each time. I love the sharpness of the voice, the resistance to commodified sexuality and the celebration of sexual expression; ultimately an engaging sense of defiance and a profound sense of place. There’s something of the style of Wallace Stevens here for me: it’s at once intimate and resists easy interpretation; exquisitely detailed and still dream-like and visionary. You can get lost in it, and it’s a great pleasure to do so.
